Today, the EU Commission wants to present its plan for a uniform European digital ID and at the same time present the draft for the review of the eIDAS regulation. Susanne Dehmel, member of the Bitkom management board, explains:

"Secure, digital identities already play a key role in the digital ecosystem: They ensure security , protect people and processes, and create trust between senders and recipients. As more and more everyday activities are shifted to the digital world, digital proof of one's own identity is becoming increasingly important. For example, many processes that are still analog today can only be transferred from the physical citizens' office to the laos gambling data digital future of administration via a reliable, digital identity standard. In order to leverage the potential of digital identities, there needs to be cooperation between the public and private sectors and, above all, a uniform approach across Europe. Especially with regard to the implementation of the current eIDAS regulation, there are still too many special national rules for regulating authentication and identification methods. Corona has shown us that the time of small-state approaches is finally over. Making services and administrative services accessible across national borders is more important today than ever - and not just in a pandemic. The European eIDAS regulation forms the basis for defining harmonized requirements for digital identities in the EU.

The European market is currently too fragmented in terms of regulations for the Europe-wide use of identity services and the scaling of the business models of identity service providers. And even at the national level, industry-specific requirements make the growth and spread of identity services and thus digital business models difficult. This should be remedied as quickly as possible through European harmonization, standardization and cooperation. The review now proposed offers the opportunity to firmly anchor trust services and digital identities in the European economic area. The implementation of the eIDAS regulation should be understood and promoted as an important contribution to greater data and consumer protection in Germany."
