The correct expression would be cold or have a cold

Post by Bappy12 »

Since we usually talk about 'serious' topics, I thought it was time to disconnect and deal with more pleasant matters. As they say: routine is not good! Today we are going to talk about a fundamental aspect when learning a language, the so-called False Friends .

If you want to know why people look at you strangely when you say I just talked to my avocado or why your bosses throw their hands up in horror when you say you'll put the documents in the folder , you should read this post. I assure you that you will understand the reason for these reactions.False friends

False Friends refer to words that are similar in two languages, but have a different meaning. On more than one occasion, this confusion can cause you more than one problem, because you will surely be saying something totally different from what you wanted to say. Between Spanish and English, there are many False Friends and I have decided to gather those that are most common and that can generate the most embarrassing situations.

One day, while walking down the street, you decide to stop and sit on a bench. telemarketing leads colombia telephone number data This expression would not make sense because you would be resting in a bank. If you were looking for a park bench, you would use bench .
Imagine you're in court and suddenly you say: "I just talked to my avocado." Surely more than one person would look at you as if you were crazy, do you know why? Avocado , even though it sounds like a lawyer, actually means avocado. So you would be saying: I just talked to my avocado. If you need to defend yourself legally, go to a lawyer.
Your boss tells you to put away some very important documents. You confidently say, "Okay, I'll put them in the folder." He'll probably throw his hands up in horror, because you're telling him that you're going to put them in the folder! The correct word would be folder .
One afternoon you're hanging out with your friends and you blow your nose and say, "I am constipated ." They'll probably laugh (and quite a bit), because you're telling them that you're constipated.
If you want to surprise your partner by telling him/her that you are pregnant, don't tell him/her that you are embarrassed because he/she will ask you why you are embarrassed. In this case you would say "I am pregnant ".
These are some of the most well-known False Friends and unfortunately there is no magic trick that will help us detect them in time. The only solution is to learn them all by heart… I know, it's outrageous! It is very important, (especially) if we plan to go to English-speaking countries, to be prepared to differentiate these terms and apply them in the right places and times. There will be people who will find it easy to differentiate them and there will be others who will find it a little more difficult. For these last people, a piece of advice: never give up and remember that there will always be academies or training consultants to help you overcome this barrier. At Grupo Femxa we take the training of our students very seriously . Therefore, if you need help to perfect your English, I recommend that you take a look at our private language courses .
