Once upon a time when I was little, around 1876, right after the wheel was invented, there was a group of skaters that became a legend over the years that people still try to imitate in one way or another.
The group is Tim Powell Peralta, the year is 1987, at a time when they rode in high-top skates without a hitch and the deadliest trick around was the hand plant on the floor, Bones 360 and maybe a flip here and there that only the experts would do...
In any case, the group represented the largest and most popular company at the time, no one wanted to hear about any other company if it wasn't Powell, everything revolved around the red dragon that was the company's symbol. In general, during this period, the whole thing about googles, snakes and nonsense of this kind characterized the general board graphics.
Bones Brigade was:
Lance Mountain, Tommy Guerrero, Mike McGill, Steve Caballero and of course Tony Hawk.
Per Willinder and a few other people who now have Alzheimer's phone number data advanced Parkinson's (like me), but these guys are the people who shaped the sport at that time and created a cult following around them that still evokes nostalgia in some people today.
Did you know that the McTwist (540) was first performed in 1984 by Mike McGill, hence the name of the trick? Rodney Mullen is also of course responsible for quite a few of the tricks you do today from 10 steps (literally). Most of the big names of today like Colin McKay, Danny Way, Bucky Lask started at Powell.
Powell assembled an amazing team of skaters and released a skateboarding movie that claimed to be a full-length movie with a plot. The movie - The Search for Animal Chin - came out and became one of the most well-known movies in the industry. Marketing-wise, it did wonders for the company and following the movie, millions of boards were sold around the world. It should be remembered that at that time there was no internet and the way to distribute the movies was by recording from a video cassette to a second or simply by stealing the cassette from a friend.
Some people have seen this movie nearly 200 times because there was nothing else to watch. The zip-zoom of websites and the pace of today's videos is a dream for that time...
In any case, the movie tells the story of a group of skaters who are looking for a guy named Animal Chin and the skateboarding adventures they encounter along the way. The climax of the movie is of course the end, where they find a huge ramp starring the aforementioned names with performances that would put today's leading skaters to shame.
There were adjuncts around like Valli, Rodney Mullen
