The Internet is used more for social networks than for sending emails

75% of Spanish users and more than two thirds of the online population worldwide visit membership communities, i.e. social networks and blogs. With these figures, social media become the fourth most popular online category, after search engines, portals and PC software manufacturers, but ahead of email. These are the results of the global study Global Faces and Networked Places conducted by Nielsen.

In Spain, 75% of the online population is part of Member Communities , almost 10% more than in 2007. After Brazil, with 80%, it is the country with the most Internet users hooked on social networks. However, the country that has experienced the greatest growth in the number of social media users has been Germany, with a growth of 12.9% compared to 2007, which means that 51% of Internet users are social network users.
The study also looks at advertising on social media. The problem is that users are simultaneously consumers and producers of content, and are therefore particularly sensitive to commercial messages, Nielsen says. One solution could be to start conversations with members of communities instead of inserting banners. The study states that “advertising cannot interfere with the experience of the network.” “Messages must be presented in an authentic, sincere and modest style.
