Our Take: Thumbnails are one of the most important elements in your video’s success. They are so important that we marketers have used many third-party tools and plugins in the past to test and optimize thumbnails. We're excited to see this feature rolling out to YouTube Studio. No matter which tool you use to test thumbnail performance, there are two metrics to keep an eye on: impression click-through rate and watch time. If your video has a low impression click-through rate but a high average watch time compared to other videos, you need to change the thumbnail. Why? Not many people clicked to watch the video, but those who did watched the video watched a fair amount of the content. Using thumbnails that get more clicks will get you more viewers who watch longer. If your click-through rate is high but watch times are low, you're likely experiencing an issue that stems from the theme or content itself. Comparing these two metrics will tell you which situation you are in.
