Last September, only one in four companies (25 percent) had fully completed the implementation of the GDPR. The EU Commission had planned a fundamental review of the new data protection rules for the current year.
From Bitkom's point of view, what is needed above all is greater clarity and standardization of interpretation in Europe and a risk-oriented gradation of obligations. "The GDPR has a fundamental birth defect: it does not differentiate between twitter database associations, start-ups or large corporations and does not sufficiently differentiate between the most diverse data processing processes," says Dehmel. Instead of tarring everyone with the same regulatory brush, the type and extent of data processing should be decisive for the application of the rule. In addition, the use of data in the research environment should be easier.
"Key technologies such as artificial intelligence must not be slowed down by rigid laws. At the same time, privacy must be guaranteed even when using these technologies. To achieve this, we must promote technical approaches such as the pseudonymization and anonymization of data even more. How we make data usable will be crucial for Germany as a business location in the future," said Dehmel.
