Memrise, Duolingo, Babbel and other similar tools offer which are supposed to speed up learning. Flashcards can actually help you memorize single words. However, this type of application does not really improve your language level, and can even waste your time. Memorizing the meaning of words without context takes a lot of time.

Language learning apps give the illusion of progress, but they don't actually improve your skills. Save the time you spend on these apps to focus on active learning, reading a newspaper or listening to a foreign language radio show.
