To measure the open rate with Google Analytics, you can use something called the Measurement Protocol
. The Measurement Protocol is a new mechanism that allows you to measure data in Google Analytics without pasting in the Google Analytics code. The Measurement Protocol sends analytics information to Google via an HTTP request. In other words, you can measure the open rate of your email newsletter by placing the Measurement Protocol URL in the image tag in your HTML email.
First, create a Measurement Protocol URL using a tool called software managers email lists Hit Builder
. Once you open Hit Builder, log in with your Google Analytics account.
Next, fill in the required parameters.
v (protocol version) 1
t(hit type) event
tid (tracking ID) Google Analytics ID (click in the field to see options)
cid (client ID) Click the mark on the right to create it automatically.
