There are precise indicators to determine when a source comes from a traffic generating bot, and in general terms a bot is divided between two sources: referral or direct.
In Google Analytics go to Acquisition > All Traffic > Source/Medium.
Once there you will know that your referral traffic was driven by bots if:
You have a new session percentage of 100%.
Your bounce rate is 100%.
The average session duration turns out to be zero seconds.

In the case of direct traffic generated by bots, these same numbers should appear, but you will need to go further within the same Google Analytics > secondary dimension > Host name.
If it is real and genuine traffic, your website URL will appear as the hostname, otherwise, it is surely a bot.
To make sure that the numbers you see in Analytics are legitimate, there are a few tricks you can use: you can create multiple Views within your account, so you have one unfiltered View that contains all of your website traffic data including bots, and another one that is filtered without the bot traffic data.
