Number of Internet users continues to rise – most frequently searched for information about goods and services

In 2018, 90.0% of the population of Lower Saxony aged ten and over stated that they had used the Internet within the last three months . According to the Lower Saxony State Office for Statistics (LSN), this represents an increase of 13.1 percentage points within eight years (2010: 76.9%). Of these Internet users, nine out of ten went online daily or almost daily.

The level of education also played a role here: people aged 16 and over with a low level of education used the Internet less often (78.2%) within the last three months than respondents with a medium (91.1%) or high (96.4%) level of education.

This was followed by sending or receiving emails (90.8%) and internet/online banking (78.6%), which increased particularly sharply with an increase of 19.2 percentage points compared to the previous year (2017: 59.4%).

In the last twelve months, 68.4% of online shoppers aged 16 and over ordered clothing or sporting goods at least once and more than half purchased consumer goods such as furniture, toys or tableware online (53.2%). This was followed by orders for tickets for theatre and cinema performances or music and sporting events (42.7%), books, newspapers and magazines in paper or digital form (41.4%) and booking holiday accommodation (41.4%).

The proportion of households in Lower Saxony equipped with Internet access – regardless of whether it was actually used – remained almost unchanged at 92.2% (2017: 92.1%).

These results are based on the " Survey on the use of information and communication technologies in private households" (ICT), which is carried out every year in spring across the EU and in which around 12,000 households nationwide take part - including around 1,100 households in Lower Saxony. The questions mainly relate to the past three months. In some cases, questions are also asked about the past twelve months - for example, when asked about the type of goods and services that were bought or ordered for private use over the Internet.
