It is not the first time this year that there has been speculation about alleged Google updates. It now seems that a major update actually took place between March 10 and 14. Ranking trackers showed major movements on the search results pages. These are also visible in Germany, the focus so far has been on March 14. Google itself has not commented on the possible update.


Around February 19th, we noticed a significant decline in featured snippets in Google's search results. Now, many of the lost featured snippets have returned. Google has announced that it will stop using third-party cookies in Chrome in the future and is not planning any other alternative to analyze users' individual surfing behavior. Instead, it uses FLoC ( F ederated L earning o f C ohorts), an API that enables interest-based advertising while preserving privacy. FLoC classifies individuals into a cohort based on their interests, which creates anonymity. Unlike cookies, user data is stored locally in the browser and not on the third-party server. FLoC is intended to take into account the interests of both users who are interested in data protection and advertisers. The FLoC-based cohorts are expected to be tested with advertisers from the second quarter. According to Google, advertisers can expect at least 95% of conversions per dollar spent compared to cookie-based advertising.
